Whins Resource Centre Service Users
These are profiles of real people who use the services based at the Whins Resource Centre.
Scott, aged 62 years
"I first heard about the Whins from the Rehabilitation Unit at Stirling Royal Infirmary, whilst recovering from a stroke. I was very interested as I hoped to meet people and get out the house.
I am involved in quite a few different things at the Whins. I enjoy the games groups and outings. I enjoy the lunches! I have been on a computer course, and digital photography course.
The computer course has been very beneficial as I previously worked as a manager of materials for the railways and worked extensively with computers. After my stroke I thought I had forgotten everything about computers but the course helped to bring my skills back.
I really enjoy Mechatronics, which was a group initially set up by Forth Valley College. Where we make electronic gadgets, or strip down and try to repair electrical goods.
All in all I am very satisfied with the service the Whins provides.
My name has been put forward by fellow service users to be a member of the service user committee, which has made me feel very good. The committee represents the views of the service users, where we put forward ideas, views and suggestions.I am vice chairperson of the committee.
Coming to the centre has made me appreciate my capabilities. I cant praise the centre staff high enough."
Stuart, aged 35 years
"I heard about the Whins from my Social Worker, she thought it would be a good idea for me to come to get me out of the house and help build my confidence.
I used to come to the Whins on the centre transport, but I started to do independent travel training with one of the members of staff. I asked if I could do this as I wanted to learn how to use the local buses so I could get out and about.
I spent a few weeks with a member of staff going on the buses, learning to read the timetables, until I felt confident to go on my own. Then for a few times I did it on my own and the staff member followed the bus in his car. I now come to the Whins on public transport and I feel more confident and independent.
I enjoy the computer group, I had never used a computer before I came to the Whins. I also enjoy the outings, I go to play pool and go to the golf driving range. I like mixing with the others.
I really enjoy my time at the centre."
