Cycle Project
The ethos behind the Whins Resource Centre Cycle Project is to promote cycling as an opportunity for everyone, regardless of whether they are able bodied or have a disability. Cycling is a great pastime that enables people to enjoy lots of benefits:
- enjoy the local scenery
- promote better health
- save money on transport
- enjoy the fun that a bicycle offers
Funding - Awards For All
The Friends of the Whins Client Committee submitted a funding application to Lottery "Awards For All" in 2009 which was successful. The Whins Client Committee was awarded a grant of £9,995 to purchase a range of adapted bicycles to suit people with a range of disabilities.
The Client Committee spent time researching different types of adapted bicycles, and selected a wide variety of bikes that enabled as many people as possible to take part in cycling.
Adapted Bicycles
At the present time the Whins Resource Centre has 11 bikes. The bicycles they have are:
- 3 hand crank bicycles
- 1 company bicycle
- 1 tandem
- 1 semi-recumbant tricycle
- 1 tricycle
- 4 standard bicycles
You can view images of the adapted bicycles in our Friends of the Whins Cycle Project gallery.
Assessment
The Whins Resource Centre has a number of trained staff who carry out an assessment to match individuals to the most suitable bicycle for them.
Small groups go out in the community with a trained Cycle Leader, on local cycle routes, for example Alloa to Cambus etc, best suited to the group's abilities.
Lending the bicycles
The bikes are used by groups within the Whins several times a week, however they are available for loan free of charge by contacting the Whins Resource Centre. All bicycles are insured for use.
The bicycles can be loaned to individuals, or to organisations who wish to access them.
