Leanne's on the Ball

Clackmannanshire Council employee Leanne Ross is getting ready to travel to Serbia with Glasgow City FC to play in the first round of the UEFA Women's Cup.

Leanne works as an Active Schools Co-ordinator based at Alva Academy, organising a full range of after school clubs and inter-school competitions.

The midfielder and her team will be up against teams from Serbia, the Netherlands and Moldova.

Leanne, who has been capped 26 times for the Scottish women's A squad, has just returned from Finland where Scotland were beaten by the hosts.

She said: "Playing football has given me lots of opportunities to travel all over Europe and further afield and I really enjoy the competitive side of it, but playing in the UEFA Women's Cup will be a new experience for me.

"It's a great chance for us to play against European opposition and we'[re confident in our own ability and we'll be giving it our best shot."

Leanne was an integral member of the Glasgow City team that won the Scottish Women's Premier League title last season. That result meant they qualified for the first round of the UEFA Cup which takes place from September 4 to 9.

Leanne completed an HND in Sports Coaching at Forth Valley College before progressing to Stirling University.
Council warns of roadwork disruption

As part of the ongoing improvement work at Lime Tree Walk, the road will be closed to traffic over the next two weeks.

The south bound carriageway will be closed first, followed by the north bound carriageway to allow the resurfacing to be completed. The work is due to be completed on 15th September 2008.

Local residents and businesses have been informed and access to Park Primary School, Alloa Family Centre, local businesses and homes will be maintained by following signage within the traffic management system.

A range of improvement works have already been carried out in Lime Tree Walk including:

replacing the diseased lime trees with heavy standard lime trees on the central reservation

constructing new footpaths

adding cycleways

adding car parking

putting in railings, gates and street furniture

soft landscaping

additional streetlighting for the ''safe routes to school'' programme

These improvements mean that the distinctive and historic wide avenue will be retained as a dual carriageway with space for the passage of vehicles and convenient lay-bys so that cars can pull in. A wide footway and cycle path will encourage people to walk or cycle.

The Council's Property Development Team Leader Ninian Somerville said: "Our contractor has pledged to keep disruption and noise to a minimum over the next fortnight. Should anyone have any concerns over how the work is being carried out, I would ask that they call me immediately and we will try to resolve matters."

Ninian can be contacted on 01259 452636.

Chance to Make Your Mark on New Alloa Academy

The new Alloa Academy will be home to a magnificent window created by one of the world's leading glass artists.

And local people will have a chance to have their work incorporated into the design at a series of forthcoming workshops.

Alec Galloway is Head of Architectural Glass at Edinburgh College of Art, but still finds time to travel the world participating in a wide variety of projects. He has been commissioned by Clackmannanshire Council to create a large scale architectural glass installation within the new Alloa Academy.

Alec is holding three workshops at Alloa-based Retroglass next month where attendees will learn about glass painting techniques and design and be able to contribute towards the final art work.

Alec said: "I will be teaching people about traditional kiln-fired glass painting which is a simple process under supervision, but adds detail, texture, shading and depth to a design. I will be incorporating the finished pieces into my final work."

Alec's designs for the window have been influenced by Alloa's industrial past and will also include crows - a motif that regularly occurs in Alec's work.

"The window will be in the school's main entrance and I hope it will have a significant impact. I really hope those attending the workshops will take pride in the fact that their work will be included in the installation," he added.

Born in Greenock, Alec's art encompasses both the traditional and contemporary. From 1997 to 2000 he designed for one of the Middle East's largest glass studios based in Dubai. He undertook projects for many of the country's most prestigious buildings including the famous Burj Al Arab (the tallest hotel in the world) and the Wafi mall which houses the Middle East's largest stained glass window.

The workshops are open to all local people of every level and ability, but places are limited so booking is essential. The workshops take place at Retroglass, Unit 1, Carsebridge Court, Cooperage Way, Alloa, FK10 3LQ, from 4 - 8pm on Thursday 4th September, Friday 5th September and Thursday 11th September. To book a place contact the Council's Cultural Planner Kathleen O'Neill at koneill@clacks.gov.uk or call 01259 763964.

The project was awarded Pathfinder Status by the Scottish Government in recognition of this example of good practice.

'Mapping Routes Beyond Faces' will be exhibited at the Aberdona Gallery for Artisans. Aberdona is a newly established workshop facility in a setting that inspires a range of artistic collaborations. A broad range of work from various projects organised by Clackmannanshire Council's Cultural and Community Service throughout the county will be on view to complement the main exhibition and illustrate the county's growing national reputation in the arts.

Most of the projects and workshops held at Aberdona focus on traditional crafts including ceramics/pottery, glass, silversmithing and woodwork production. Public art consultations, such as those involving internationally acclaimed sculptor Andy Scott, take place here. Aberdona currently offers the best exhibition space in the county, and while the main exhibition will be upstairs, the ground floor will show a snapshot of what has been achieved over recent years.

This includes:

Work with Glasgow School of Art to produce public art

Work with Edinburgh College of Art on glass production

Andy Scott incorporating residents' ideas into his stunning sculptures

A story box - a creative writing digital media collaboration

Rap - film and sound production

A collaboration between NHS Forth Valley and Glasgow School of Art centred on smoking cessation - quitters helped with creative life skills and a the creation of an innovative 'quitting pack'

Work from Clackmannanshire's new community gallery 'The Vessel' with residents work selling alongside designers with international reputation

Mapping Routes Beyond Faces is open free of charge to the public from Saturday 30th August to Saturday 27th September, daily from 10am - 4pm, closed Wednesdays and Sundays.
