A Civil or Religious Marriage in Clackmannanshire
For a civil marriage ceremony you should contact the Registrar in Alloa as soon as possible to provisionally book your wedding date. The Registrar will be happy to advise you on personalising your ceremony, allowing you to create a very personal ceremony to share and celebrate with family and friends, or in private if preferred. Our aim is to provide a ceremony that is unique to you. Please also see our publication 'Ceremonies in Clackmannanshire' below.
If you prefer a religious ceremony, you should contact your minister, priest or celebrant to agree on a date and time.
No matter whether your intention is to opt for a religious or civil ceremony, the Registrar must still deal with the legal formalities to your wedding. General guidance on the legal formalities to marriage can be found in the Marriage in Scotland Leaflet (Leaflet RM1). Marriage Notice forms must be completed by both the bride and groom and returned to the Registrar, and can be submitted up to 3 months in advance. You can use this link to view Marriage Notice - Scotland: Form M10. Ideally, we would recommend that Marriage Notice forms be returned at least 4 to 6 weeks before the date of the ceremony. However, the minimum period the notices must be submitted is 15 days before the date of the proposed marriage.
Depending on your own personal circumstances, further documents must be submitted with your Marriage Notice forms (these could include evidence of birth extract, divorce, citizenship, death certificate of previous spouse of partner etc). Documents required may take some time to be produced.
Please contact the Registrar as soon as possible for relevant advice.
If you are planning to get married in the UK and you are subject to Immigration Control, you will require to contact the Home Office.
During your discussions with your Registrar you will be advised of the documentation you will have to present. Once all of these formalities are finalised, your Registrar will complete your Marriage Schedule. The Schedule is the document that the bride and groom, the witnesses to your marriage, and the person officiating, all sign at the end of the ceremony.
If you decide on a religious ceremony, either the bride or groom must attend personally at the Registrars’ office within 7 days prior to your wedding to collect the Marriage Schedule. The Schedule must be given to the person performing your wedding before the ceremony. After your marriage, the Schedule must be returned to the Registrar within 3 days in order that your marriage can be registered.
If your choice is to have a civil ceremony, your Registrar will retain the Schedule for completion on the day.
