Youth Work Principles
Principles within Clackmannanshire involves work with young people in the 12 – 24 age-range. It is primarily a community learning and development process, delivered in safe settings and based on experiential learning, participation, confidence building and the taking of responsibility. By working in partnership with young people in their communities it is important to start from and respond to their attitudes, values and needs, as expressed by them. Working in partnership with young people in community settings compliments school curriculum by supporting the development of core skills which include:
- communication
- interpersonal skills
- problem solving
- critical thinking
- working with others
How we deliver Youth Work
Youth Clubs & Drop-in Groups
Young people meet and engage in a range of programmes determined by them.
Forums/Action Groups
In partnership with other services young people can influence decisions that are made in relation to their needs and issues faced. We work in partnership with Dialogue Youth to undertake consultations and involve young people in the democratic process.
Holiday & Residential Programmes
Young people are consulted and participate in the planning and organisation of holiday programmes, they undertake fundraising events to subsidise cost.
Project / Activities
External funding allows young people to work within communities to develop and support various activities and events which benefit both the group and wider community e.g video projects, music projects, late night leagues, it’s a knockout and variety shows and conferences.
Outdoor Education Programmes
Outdoor and residential activities are organised by young people along with experienced staff.
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards is a voluntary, non-competitive programme of practical, cultural and adventurous activities, designed to support the personal and social development of young people aged 14 – 25. There are four sections that they need to complete for each award; service, skills, physical and expedition.
Detached/Outreach Youth Work
Detached work takes place on the street or at places where young people want to meet. Signposting young people and providing information that will assist them in making informed choices.
Work with schools (Secondary)
Full time members of staff spend time working with staff and pupils, the do group work, lunch clubs, after school programmes and holiday activities. Young people gain a sense of achievement in the informal work they do which links directly back into the school.
