At Tillicoultry our main purpose is to enhance children's quality of learning through the effective and efficient delivery of the curriculum. We provide a range of educational and social experiences appropriate to the age, ability and needs of our pupils to ensure they become successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and responsible citizens. The context for this caring development is a positive climate where all individuals feel valued and encouraged to develop their maximum potential. We are a Health Promoting School and we have consistently high expectations and matche these with high quality resources and teaching strategies. We are committed to the philosophy of continuous improvement of every aspect of the school's work and life. We maintain positive partnerships with parents, carers and outside agencies for the benefit of the individual child and the school community.

Photogtaph - Tillicoultry Primary SchoolTillicoultry Primary School is situated at the foot of the Ochil Hills adjacent to Fir Park dry ski slope. It serves the town of Tillicoultry which has a variety of housing and local businesses. The four-storey building is well maintained and our excellent facilities include a gymnasium, separate assembly hall, computer suite, music room, low stimulus teaching room, extensive library and Out of School Care room. The school grounds include a large grassed area.

The school was inspected in 2006 by Her Majesty's Inspectors of Education and received an excellent report. The following is a short extract and the whole report can be accessed via the link at the end of this profile:"Tillicoultry Primary School provided a happy and purposeful learning environment in which pupils achieved very good standards of attainment. Staff were strongly committed to meeting pupils' needs and provided them with a braod curriculum. Pupils were making very good progress in their personal and social development and, overall were confident, enthusiastic learners. The strong sense of community and encouragement to learn were contributing significantly to the success the school enjoyed and its continuing capacity to improve."

The curriculum is based on the 5-14 Scottish Guidelines. However, the school is developing the new "Curriculum for Excellence" which will be introduced over the next few years. Language resources include Ginn, Link Up, Heinemann, Longman and Wellington Square reading schemes and various novel studies; North Lanarkshire and Scholastic Writing Skills Programmes; Collins Primary Grammar and Punctuation; and an extensive spelling scheme which incorporates target spelling. Ginn, Argyle & Bute and Stanley Thorne Science materials are in use and resources for Environmental Studies are regularly updated and supplemented; there are extensive topic boxes and research materials as well as various teacher-devised resources. There is a whole school programme for ICT where skills progression has been carefully planned to support learning across the curriculum. Heinemann Maths and Problem Solving materials are used by all stages and the Target Tables programme ensure practice and progression in tables in primary four and five. Expressive Arts are promoted by a visiting music class specialist, peripatetic instrumental instructors, and regular assemblies and concerts. A PE specialist delivers the Clackmannanshire Physical Education Programme.

In addition the early stages have followed an accelerated teaching programme of phonics. Collaborative learning and assessment strategies are used throughout the school andn our older pupils are taught in sets for mathematics and reading. All of these approaches contribute to our excellent achievement and attainment standards.

Our pupils with additional needs in learning, behaviour or personal and social development are supported by staff and by differentiated learning programmes, delivered as part of class, group or individual activities as appropriate. The 'Seasons for Growth' initiative supports pupils with emotional needs. 'Brain Gym' and regular drinking of water are encouraged throughout the day. Those with co-ordination difficulties attend regular movement groups.

The school organises lunchtime and extra-curricular activities in craft, drama, ski-ing, basketball and many more throughout the year.

The partnership with parents is mutually supportive and there is a Parent Council and various parent "theme teams" which support the school and raise funds. Parents recently funded two interactive whiteboards. A team of parent helpers assist in many ways across the school. There are various parent information evenings and initiatives throughout the year. The school regularly reports to parents and carers through information evenings, an Open Night, parent meetings and written reports.

The personal and social development of all pupils is fostered through whole-school initiatives in personal safety, drugs education, anti-bullying and the promotion of self-esteem. Circle Time and regular assemblies ensure that pupils' pastoral needs are addressed and supported. Achievement and attainment of both the informal and formal curriculum are regularly celebrated.

The school has achieved the Silver Award within the Eco Schools project and we are looking forward to achieving our Green Flag soon. We are a health promoting school with recognised accreditation.

All children take part in enterprising activities based on the national Determind to Succeed strategy.

The views of pupils are very important and each class has a Class Council. Representatives meet as our Pupil Council and contribute to decisions about the running of the school.

The school has a positive ethos where hard work, appropriate behaviour and the enjoyment of learning and success are regularly recognised and celebrated. Citizenship and sense of community are promoted and encouraged. This approach underpins all curricular areas.
