Photogtaph - St. Mungo's Primary SchoolSt. Mungo's RC Primary School was opened in 1984 and was officially opened by the Right Reverend Bishop Vincent Logan, The Bishop of Dunkeld, on 11 June 1985.

The school celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 2010 with a great many events for pupils and parents.  These were organised by a supportive Parent Council.

Facilities and location

The school has two main open areas with classrooms clustered around them.  There is one area for infants and one for junior and senior pupils.

St Mungo’s is well resourced with each classroom equipped with an interactive whiteboard (IWB).  There are numerous IWB resources to support a range of curricular areas.

The school has an ICT suite which has been installed for some time.

In session 2011/12 there will be 5 composite classes - P1/2, P2/3, P3/4, P5/6 and P6/7.

St Mungo’s is situated in Alloa South and is currently surrounded by open park land.

The school has extensive playing fields with benches for pupils to sit.  The school garden is established and is situated at the front of the school.

New housing has been built beside the school in Alloa Park and a road giving access to the school is currently being built.

Additional support needs

The school uses the Staged Intervention (SI) process to support pupils who have additional support needs.  Some pupils will have Individual Education Plans (IEPs) as and when required.  Regular SI reviews are held throughout the year.

Curriculum

Literacy & English
Reading

Infant pupils are taught to read using the Clackmannanhire Synthetic Phonics Programme (CSPP).  The main texts for Reading are:

Language Tests
Spelling
Numeracy & Mathematics
PSE/Citizenship
RE

St Mungo’s has a good record of experiential learning.  Pupils regularly take part in activities outside of school.  In the past these have included visits to the cinema, theatre, museums and science centres.

The school regularly has work and student placements and this joint working has proved beneficial to all concerned.

After school clubs

Active Schools run after school clubs for sporting activities and these have included rugby, ball games, dance, badminton, etc.

The school runs after school clubs from Supported Study funding and clubs on offer in 2011/12 will be Knex Challenge, science club and arts and crafts.

Parent Council

The Parent Council is very supportive and actively raises funds to support school activities.  The Parent Council also organises social activities for pupils and parents.

St Mungo’s has a close working relationship with the church and with parents.

Associated secondary schools

The school has two associated secondary schools - St Modan's High School in Stirling and Alloa Academy. Both schools provide good liaison programmes for pupils to ease transition from primary to secondary schools.

Pupils in P6 & P7 visit St Modan’s for a 4 week block each year where pupils can enjoy sessions in Music, Art, Science, etc.  Alloa Academy has a range of activities for pupils too including a CSI activity, a learning festival, an activity day in June and visits from secondary teachers.
