The school has strong links with the local community and entertains senior citizens, parents and friends of the school at events such throughout the year. We also maintain close ties with Sauchie and Coalsnaughton Parish Church and hold regular assemblies. Parents are more than welcome to join us when we attend the church and are always invited to the various school productions.

The school maintains close links with the associated secondary school, Lornshill Academy. It also welcomes students and senior pupils on work experience. The school regularly welcomes students on teacher training programmes also. Parent helpers are also an important asset to the school and are always welcome.

The ethos of the school is based on respect between all members of the school community and the development of self-discipline in pupils.

All aspects of the curriculum are taught and developed according to 5-14 Guidelines. We are, however, working hard to embrace many of the opportunities that will come with a 'curriculum for excellence'. Through our improvement plan we are constantly striving to further enhance attainment and consistently improve standards and quality in all school functions. Our hard working and dedicated team of staff all take on additional leadership tasks and help the school strive for excellence, developing the necessary life skills in children that make them successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens, and effective contributors - both now and in the future. This year the staff will be undertaking additional professional research and reading to develop their skills in a range of areas - all aimed towards the school achieving excellence. Pupils will also be instrumental in helping us highlight areas where future progress should be made and will continue to be proactively involved in setting their own targets and mapping out their own learning.

Curriculum programmes include:

  • Reading: Clackmannanshire Early Learning Programme, Oxford Reading Tree, Story World, Story Street and Genre Skills (Longman)
  • Writing - North Lanarkshire (under review) Nelson Developing
  • Mathematics : IPM - authority programme/TeeJay Maths
  • Science : Stanley Thornes/Glasgow Science

Each year we also introduce problem solving and thinking skills to permeate all aspects of the curriculum. We place great importance on outdoor learning, life skills and both academic and non-academic achievement - both in and out of school.

The early stages are taught Clackmannanshire's synthetic phonics programme. This has recently received a great deal of publicity, having been highlighted as instrumental in dramatically improving standards.

We currently have specialist teachers in physical education and music.

The school has undergone an extensive programme of networking. Every child has a unique username and password which allows access to a range of programmes on the network. Internet security is taught frequently to ensure student safety. The school also has access to a class set of laptop computers called Class in a Box. We have a laptop computer in each rooom and Alphasmart typing resources to help children with writing and spelling.
