Education Maintenance Allowances  Bookmark and Share

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) is a programme funded by the Scottish Government and administered by Local Authority Education Departments for schools throughout Scotland.

PLEASE NOTE: The Scottish Ministers reserve the right to review the EMA programme at any time and they plan to review the programme in December 2010. Any award made to students will only be guaranteed up to the end of December 2010.

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) is a weekly allowance of up to £30 per week (dependant on household income) payable during term time. These allowances are paid to the young person, directly into their bank account. From academic year 2010-11, bonus payments will no longer be part of the programme.

For session 2010/11 EMAs will apply to all eligible pupils whose birthdays falls between 1st March 1991 and 28th February 1995, inclusive, who are at secondary school and are willing to participate in an approved learning agreement at school for a minimum of 21 hours per week.

The young person must hold a bank account in his/her own name.

The EMA is only paid for full weeks within term time up to a maximum of 42 weeks in any one academic year. It can only be paid for when 100% attendance has been achieved by the young person.

Payment of an EMA is restricted to a maximum of 3 years. However, some young people with Special Educational Needs may be entitled to receive 3 years EMA support over a 4 year period.

Young people from families who receive Income Support are also eligible for Free School Meals. Please contact Facilities Schools and Welfare Team for more details.
