- Aerosols
Please make sure they are empty. Then, remove the lids and place these along with the aerosol cans into your blue bin.
- Aluminium Foil
- clean foil can be recycled in your blue bin,
- dirty foil can be recycled in the metals skip at Forthbank Recycling Centre, Bowhouse Road, Alloa.
- Batteries
- Car batteries can be recycled at Forthbank Recycling Centre.
- Household batteries should be placed in your blue box or taken to local shops that have battery bins.
- Bikes
- Recyke-a-bikeis an independent organisation who recycles bicycles within the Forth Valley.
- You can also take them to Forthbank Recycling Centre.
- Books
- Place them in a bag and put them in your blue box.
- Large quantities can also be recycled directly through Alloa Community Enterprises.
- Donate them to a local charity shop.
- Place in the charity bank located at Forthbank Recycling Centre.
- Really poor quality books can be recycled in your blue bin.
- Cartons for juice and food
- Place in your blue bin.
- Take to Forthbank Recycling Centre.
- Ceramics and Crockery
- Quality items can be donated to local charities.
- Broken items can be recycled at Forthbank Recycling Centre, Bowhouse Road, Alloa.
- Chemicals including oil, paint and pesticides
These can be recycled at Forthbank Recycling Centre.
- Children's Clothes and Toys
- Clothing can be passed onto younger children to grow into.
- Clean clothing of varying quality can be put in a textile bag and placed alongside your blue box for collection.
- Check to see if your childs school collects clothing through the Rag Bag scheme as a way of raising funds.
- Consider swapping clothes and toys with friends who also have children of a similar age.
- Larger toys, buggies and cots can be sold through adverts in newspapers or on auction web sites.
- You can also donate quality items to local charity shops and Good Green Fun, a not for profit organisation diverting childrens toys and clothes away from landfill.
- Clothes can be taken to clothing banks that are situated at Forthbank Recycling Centre and at some of our other community recycling points.
E-G
- Electrical Goods including televisions, fridges, hairdryers and toys
- When replacing household electrical goods such as washing machines and fridge/freezers, ask the retailer what facilities they have for picking up your old machine.
- If the item is in good working order try advertising it on Freecycle, the local papers or e-bay. Please note that many local charities are not in a position to take electrical equipment.
- Small electrical items can be recycled in your blue box
- Take them to Forthbank Recycling Centre.
- You can also arrange a bulky uplift.
- Food Waste
- Vegetable peelings, fruit waste, tea bags, coffee grounds and egg shells can all be composted.
- All other food waste should be disposed of in your green bin.
The average Scottish Household throws away £430 of avoidable food waste every year. Visit the Love food, Hate Waste web site for ideas on how to reduce this.
- Furniture
- Alloa Community Enterprises offer a free uplift service for furniture in good condition.
- Can be taken to Forthbank Recycling Centre.
- You can arrange for furniture to be collected as a bulky uplift.
- Garden Waste
- You can compost this yourself.
- Use the brown bin service.
- Take it to Forthbank Recycling Centre.
- Organise a bulky uplift.
- Gas Cylinders
Ask your supplier if you can return it to them or alternatively take it to Forthbank Recycling Centre.
- Glass
- Glass bottles and jars can be recycled in your blue box or alternatively taken to a community recycling point.
- Other glass such as window panes and oven dishes should be taken to Forthbank Recycling Centre.
I-M
- Ink Cartridges And Mobile Phones
- Ask your retailer if they have a 'take back' scheme in place.
- Check the manufacturers web site to see if they have a scheme in place.
- If you have children, then the school they attend may collect these for recycling as a way of raising money.
- Many charities also do the same and often provide freepost envelopes for the purpose. They will usually tell you on their web site. Alternatively you can visit the web site of the recycling appeal which lists the many different charities who have recycling appeals. You can also start your own if you wish to.
- Mobile phones can also be taken down to Forthbank Recycling Centre where they can be placed in the small electrical item recycling container or recycled via a charity collection.
- Light Bulbs including Flourescent Tubes
Take to Forthbank Recycling Centre.
- Mail (unwanted)
Unwanted mail can at present be recycled in the blue bin or at some local community recycling points.
Alternatively, you can cut down on the amount of unwanted mail by taking the following steps:
- Write to sender telling them you no longer wish to receive these marketing materials.
- Register with the Mailing Preference Service. This can be done by either calling 0845 703 4599, visiting www.mpsonline.org.ukor writing to:

This service can stop unwanted mail that is delivered to a named addressee at your address - whether this is to you or another named person. The service can stop up to 95% of mail of this type. It cannot however, stop mail from companies with whom you already have dealings, mail that is addressed to "the occupier," or mail that is not addressed. - Packaging
- Packaging for larger items will often be taken away by the company who delivered to your door. Check when you order the item.
- Packaging from supermarket shopping particularly plastic bags can often be recycled back at the shop.
- Paper and Cardboard
All paper products including envelopes, newspapers, catalogues, yellow pages, cereal boxes can go in your blue bin.
- Plastic bottles and containers
Recycle these in your blue bin, but please make sure they are empty and take the lids off which you can recycle too!
S-Z
- Spectacles
Your optician will often take old spectacles back and donate them to Vision Aid.
- Textiles
Here are the options for curtains, towels, pillows, duvet covers, clothes, shoes and bags.
- Place in a plastic textile bag and put in your blue box.
- Local community recycling point.
- School or community fund raising Rag bag activity.
- Donate to a local charity shop.
- Forthbank Recycling Centre.
- Tyres
Residents can take these to Forthbank Recycling Centre.
- Wood
Wood can be recycled at Forthbank Recycling Centre.
