Recycling Advice For Schools
Schools can recycle the following items weekly in their blue recycling bin.
Paper
Paper waste is used as a raw material in the manufacture of hand towels and toilet paper. For every tonne of recycled newspaper, we save 17 trees.
Yes please to:
- White and coloured office paper
- Magazines, brochures and catalogues
- Calendars - remove binding
- Stiff paper/very thin card
- Telephone directories
- Shredded confidential paper
- Envelopes
- Brown Envelopes
No thanks to:
- Padded envelopes
- Confidential paper that has not been shredded. Secure containers exist for disposal of this material.
- Very heavily painted paper
- Tracing paper or greaseproof paper
- Paper wrapped in plastic
Cardboard
Cardboard waste is made into new cardboard products and saves 24% of the total energy needed for virgin cardboard.
Yes please to:
- All types of cardboard
No thanks to:
- Polystyrene - remove it from the box
- Polythene
- Other non cardboard types of packaging
Plastics
Plastics are shredded and heated to form beads before being made into new products. Recycling just one plastic bottle saves enough energy to power a 60W light bulb for six hours.
Yes please to:
- All plastic food containers
- All plastic drinks bottles
- Cleaning fluid containers
No thanks to:
- polystyrene
- plastic wrappings
Cans
Cans are recycled into new cans. Making one can from raw materials uses the same amount of energy that it takes to recycle 20 cans.
Yes please to:
- Empty aluminium and steel food and drinks cans.
No thanks to:
- Cans with liquid or food still in them
Tetrapak Cartons
Yes please to:
- Tetrapak cartons for milk and juice.
No thanks to:
- straws
- the liquid in the container
