Health and Safety at Work

The Safety, Health & Environment Team deal with Occupational Health and Safety including inspections of premises, investigation of accidents and complaints. Also participation in health and safety campaigns and the provision of information and other resources on the subject.

The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 applies to all work activities and places duties on employers, employees, and the self-employed to ensure the health, safety and welfare of themselves and others who may be affected by their activities, such as members of the public.

In accordance with Clackmannanshire Council's Health and Safety Inspection and Enforcement Policy the Safety, Health and Environment Team regularly inspect premises such as offices, shops, hotels, pubs, restaurants, tyre and exhaust premises, churches, etc. Investigation of accidents, injuries and dangerous occurrences is also undertaken. Each year a number of complaints are received in relation to workplace health and safety standards and these are also investigated.

The Health and Safety Executive carry out similar work in factories, petrochemical processes, agricultural activities and the domestic environment. They can be contacted locally by telephoning 0131 247 2000.

The SHE Team also undertake visits focussed on awareness-raising of a particular occupational health and safety issue. In the past, these have included, asbestos management, falls from height and trips in the workplace.

A library of health and safety publications, videos and software which can be accessed by prior arrangement is also undertaken. A range of free health and safety information leaflets is also available.

How do I report accidents?

The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 (RIDDOR) require deaths or major injuries, over 3 days injuries, certain diseases and certain dangerous occurrences to be reported to the relevant enforcing authority.

All accidents, diseases and dangerous occurrences may be reported to the Incident Contact Centre. The Centre was established on 1st April, 2001, as a single point of contact for receiving all incidents in the U.K.

Form - by completing the relevant hard copy form and faxing it to 0845 3009924 or posting to:

You can still report directly to your local HSE Office or Local Authority by completing and sending the hard copy form. These can be downloaded from the HSE website and are:

  • F2508 - Report of an injury or dangerous occurrence
  • F2508a - Report of a case of disease

These reports will be forwarded to the Incident Contact Centre for processing.
