Food Labelling and Composition

The Food and Licensing Section deals with issues relating to food labelling and composition. Part of the inspection and sampling programme undertaken by the section examines the labelling of products to ensure they are accurate and contain all the information required by law. This is important to allow consumers to make an informed choice about what they are buying. Consumers are becoming more aware of the need to know what they are eating and this information can only come from the label of a product.

If you have any queries relating to the information provided on a product label please call us for advice on freephone 0500 545540 (mobile networks may charge).

If a label is found to be inaccurate in the information it gives, including making false claims, we can take steps to put it right. For example, if a meat pie is shown to contain 60% meat on the label, you have a right to expect that to be accurate. You also have a right to be confident that the meat is actually meat and not other parts of the carcase added to make up the content.
