Borrowing from the Library Service
What is the library loan period?
There are several different loan periods depending upon what item you borrow from the library –
- Books and software – 4 weeks
- Open Learning (including language courses) – 8 weeks
- Local History Videos – 1 day
How many library items can I borrow?
- Books – up to 12 books at a time
- Open Learning (including language courses) – up to 2 items at a time
- Local History
- Videos – 1 at a time
- Software – up to 4 items at a time with subscription
How many times can I renew an item borrowed from the library?
You can renew an item as many times as is required, unless the item has been reserved by another user. On these occasions, the item must be returned to the library as soon as your period of loan is complete. On every second renewal, the item must also be renewed in person at the library. This is to ensure that the item is being looked after appropriately.
Can I renew my books by telephone?
Yes. On every second renewal, the books or any other borrowed item should be renewed in person at the library. This is to ensure that the item is being looked after appropriately.
Can I renew my books online/email?
This service is not available at the moment. Our libraries may take queries by email, but they cannot offer any of the other standard library service.
What happens if I do not return library items I have borrowed by the return date?
Fines are imposed on any item that is returned late to any of the libraries. The libraries will charge up to a maximum of 50p per item for a child user and 70p per item for an adult user.
Can I return the books to any library within Clackmannanshire?
It is preferable to return the books to the library where they were first borrowed. Our staff have to ensure that the item is returned to the correct library within the service and this can cost time and money to do so.
How can I check how many items I have on loan if I am in the library?
Any of our staff will be pleased to assist you and check your records for an accurate picture of what you have borrowed from the library.

Do the council libraries lend CDs, Talking Books in cassette/CD format, videos and DVDs?
The council libraries have the following items available for borrowing –
- Books
- Talking Books in cassette and CD format
- Videos – local history only
- CD roms – software
- They do not hire out DVDs.
Is there a charge to borrow Talking books(CD/cassette), local history videos?
For any registered disabled or retired members, there are no charges for borrowing any of these items. Other members are charged £1.50 per talking book each time it is borrowed from the library.
Can I renew my Talking books (CD/cassette), local history videos by telephone?
Any items apart from books should be renewed in person at the library.
