Development & Environmental Services Customer Surveys 2005

Early in 2005 Development Services carried out three customer surveys in order to gauge satisfaction with the services they received and to identify areas for improvement. The three areas surveyed were:

  • Development Quality
  • Building Standards
  • Roads & Transportation

The feedback highlighted that:-

  • 79% of users thought the Development Quality service was good or very good.
  • 74% users thought that the Building Standards Service was good or very good;

and that in relation to the services provided by Roads & Transportation:

  • 42% said that the standard of road maintenance was good/very good, and 38% that it was fair.
  • 31% that the standard of pavement maintenance was good/very good, and 42% that it was fair.
  • 42% that the standard of roadside verge maintenance was good/very good, and 41% that it was fair.
  • 65% that the standard of the street lighting service was good/very good, and 30% that it was fair and finally
  • 44% felt that the winter maintenance service is good/very good, and 40% that it is fair.

In terms of accessibility and the provision of information:-

  • 42% said that it was very easy or easy to report a fault or problem with roads, pavements or street lighting.
  • 73% said that they were satisfied with the opening hours operated by the three teams.
  • 61% said they were satisfied with the availability of and access to information.
  • 57% said that they were satisfied with the availability of an access to offices in these services.
  • 70% said that they were satisfied with the level of access to the services available by telephone.

The surveys also highlighted areas for improvement, in particular service users suggested that:-

  • The time taken by Development Quality (despite being the top performer in Scotland) to make planning application decisions is speeded up.
  • Building Standards improve the time they take to make Building Warrant application decisions.
  • Both teams should improve the time they take to respond to correspondence.
  • Roads & Transportation improve on the time it takes to repair roads, to grit roads and pavements, and improve the general standard of road/pavement maintenance.

Various factors may have influenced such results such as significant increases in Building Standards workloads, nevertheless the results of the surveys have been passed to the relevant Management Teams and they are considering ways of improving service delivery in the areas identified.
