Backdates
In exceptional circumstances, if you have good reason for failing to claim earlier, we may be able to backdate your entitlement to benefit from the date we receive your application form.
Rules
The Government's rules for late Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit claims are strict:
- Your claim can be backdated up to 3 months for pension credit age customers;
- Your claim can be backdated up to 6 months for working age customers.
Reasons for backdating request
- You must be able to prove you had good reason for not claiming earlier.
- You need to have a good reason for every day during the time you want to be considered for backdating.
- You must make your request for backdate in writing.
We will look at your claim and notify you of our decision.
Ignorance of the rules do not count as a valid reason and it is not enough just to prove that you had a low income during the time you want to claim for.
