Discarded Needles
Clackmannanshire is one of the safest places in Scotland to live and work, and the Community Wardens continue to strive to ensure that it remains so. However the careless disposal of syringes and other sharps does occur and it is important that the public know what to do if they should find material of this type.
The Community Wardens have been trained to deal with this type of dangerous debris, and in addition to responding to reports from the public, they carry out regular checks of areas known to be frequented by intravenous drug users to clear up any syringes.
If you find discarded syringes
Should you find syringes discarded carelessly, please contact
- Clackmannanshire Council, Tel: 01259 450000, or
- Central Scotland Police, Tel: 01259 723255
Please give as accurate a description of the location as possible to allow for the safe and speedy removal of the items.
Dangers
We would like to stress the dangers of touching discarded syringes and request that parents highlight to their children that they MUST NOT touch them under any circumstances due to the risk of injury or infection.
The best practice is to leave them where they are and inform an adult of the location, who can in turn contact the Police or Council to attend and safely dispose of the needle.
The table below shows the number of syringes uplifted by the Wardens.
| Year | Number of Needles |
|---|---|
| 2005/2006 | 179 |
| 2006/2007 | 347 |
| 2007/2008 | 324 |
| 2008/2009 | 355 |
| 2009/2010 | 698 |
| 2010/2011 | 517 |
