Community Wardens

Introduction
Thanks to a successful joint funding bid submitted by Clackmannanshire Council, Central Scotland Police, Paragon and Ochil View Housing Associations, the area netted nearly half a million pounds in February 2004 to put in place a range of anti-social behaviour schemes across the county. The funding secured from the Scottish Executive was part of a two year national initiative, which saw four new Community Wardens, supported by a Supervisor, take to the county's streets.
Clackmannanshire's bid was unique as it included the appointment of two new Community Police Officers, who work hand in hand with the Wardens and the Council's CALM team in a bid to reduce the number of anti-social incidents reported. Along with the creation of a number of grass roots community based projects, the funding will also lead to an increase in the hours of coverage - from 9am to midnight, 365 days a year.

What will they do?
- Act as additional 'eyes and ears' assisting in crime prevention and reducing fear of crime.
- Be friendly, approachable contacts in your community to discuss any concerns you may have about your local environment.
- Take rapid action on vandalism, graffiti, litter and dog fouling.
- Patrol town centres, reassuring residents and business people.
- Become involved in youth groups and meet young people to build a constructive dialogue.
- Play a part in improving community's quality of life and making neighbourhoods a better place to live.
Where will the Wardens patrol?
While the scheme is county-wide, initially the Wardens will be patrolling in:
- Alloa South and East SIP (including Alloa Town Centre)
- Posthill/Rosebank, Mount William, Lochbrae/Craigview and Main Street, Sauchie
- Newmills/Orchard, Redlands Road, Braes area and Tron Court, Tullibody
- Craighorn/Nebit, Cochrane and Johnstone Parks and Stirling Street, Alva
- Main Street, Clackmannan
In time, the Wardens scheme may be expanded, depending on community need and resources.
How will they work with other agencies?
Along with the additional police officers, the Wardens will provide heightened visibility giving the community, particularly vulnerable residents, reassurance. The Wardens will be working in partnership with established community groups to assist people where possible, provide advice or direct questions to the appropriate agency in a bid to address local issues. They will be working closely with the Council’s housing and environmental officers as well as Ochil View and Paragon staff. Members of the CALM team will also play a vital role. This team was set up to complement the work carried out by local housing offices and deal with the most extreme cases of anti-social behaviour on Council housing estates and also provides a full mediation service to help resolve neighbour disputes. Through identifying and meeting community needs, it is hoped a rapport will be established between each Warden and their local community, creating a trusting relationship, leading to residents feeling comfortable enough to raise and discuss any issues that need addressing.
